Sludge Reduction

Sludge Reduction

Auto parts manufacturing plant that produces stamped parts, body weld parts and plastic parts at a 516,000-square-foot facility.

OPERATIONAL CHALLENGE

The facility’s wastewater treatment plant was struggling to process the high volume of sludge produced by the system.

CHEMICAL SOLUTION

Kroff Chemical Company, Inc. engineered a treatment program that replaced two commodity chemicals (combined consumption of 75 gallons per day) with one specialty chemical (consumption of 10 gallons per day). The Kroff program has gone beyond providing sludge reduction and significant cost savings. It has added technical expertise to the equation, something the client was not receiving from its previous supplier. Kroff is providing a training and troubleshooting program to help the operators achieve better system control and performance going forward.

BOTTOM-LINE RESULTS

With sludge reduction achieved, the system was able to return to normal operations following start-up of the Kroff program. Replacing commodity chemicals with a specialty product saves $25,000 annually, which is a savings of 50 percent over the previous system. The program also reduces sludge production by more than half, providing an additional savings of several thousand dollars per year in disposal costs.
